The concept of honesty is the cornerstone of every society. Yet there are times when the line between honesty and dishonesty is blurred; for example, borrowing something without the owner's knowledge or permission, or creating a false impression.

By defining the concept of theft in the clearest possible terms, the Torah helps us avoid these problems and make the world a better place in which to live.
